Tillerson: Tide Can Be Turned In Afghanistan

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and south Asia is intended to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.  Speaking a State Department briefing yesterday, Tillerson said the tide can be turned in helping the Afghani efforts to battle terrorism.  He likened the military approach to what has been working against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.  He said the President has empowered commanders on the ground to make more timely decisions and conduct operations with battle plans approved by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

He said a different approach could be adopted if conditions in Afghanistan improve.  He also said Pakistan can play a key role in delivering the Taliban to the negotiating table, but must also adopt a different approach.  He also called India an "important strategic partner" with the U.S.
