In one of the more impressive debuts ever by an Oklahoma State quarterback redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders accounted for 312 yards of offense and three touchdowns in the Cowboys 52-36 win at Oregon State Friday night.
Sanders, who got the starting nod over senior transfer Dru Brown, was 19-24 passing for 203 yards, three TDs and no interceptions. He gained 109 yards rushing on 13 carries. All-American receiver Tylan Wallace caught five passes for 92 yards and two TDs and running back back Chuba Hubbard had a career high 221 yards and three TDs on 26 carries.
While the offense cruised amassing 555 total yards, the defense struggled to stop Oregon State giving up 448 yards. The Cowboy defense gave up a touchdown on the opening drive of the game but did settle in for a while forcing three straight 3-and-outs in the second quarter as the Cowboys built a 31-10 lead.
"It was a good win for us," said Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy, "I told the team in the lockerroom that I was proud of their focus. We were able to play like a disciplined football team. Thought Spencer played well for his first time out he was very effective. Obviously Chu played good, thought we blocked guys up front pretty well. So it's a good start for us."
The Cowboys have their home opener next Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium hosting McNeese State at 6pm.
