Before anyone even asked the question Mike Gundy was ready with the answer.
"There's not any news on quarterback," he told a group of reporters after the OSU Cowboys first practice of fall camp. "And if there is in the next week or so I'll certainly let you know."
But don't hold your breath. The Cowboys have 10 practices and then a major scrimmage coming up. Between now and then breaking news regarding naming a quarterback isn't likely.
"It should be a while before we know what direction we're gonna go there."
As Gundy and offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson see it the QB race is a dead heat between 5th year senior Dru Brown and redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders.
Gleeson wants his starter to be "competitive, intelligent and accurate," Gundy wants leadership from the quarterback but that's something that has to come naturally.
"I think they just have to be themselves," Gundy said. "You know you can never be anything other than who you are, it just doesn't work in what we do every day and I think it's just important for them to go out and play hard."
Here's some video of Brown and Sanders working with Gleeson from KFOR's Nate Feken
The practice session started before 5 and didn't end until after 7 Thursday evening so a bit long for a first day but from the head coach's perspective it was all good.
"Everybody's excited about the first day and getting back out there."
