Former OU coach Bob Stoops, now the head coach and general manager of the Dallas franchise in the XFL, is strongly denying reports that he's close to signing a deal to become the new head coach at Florida State.
Tallahassee TV station WTXL reported last night that "a deal was really close to be being done" and that an announcement from the University could "come as early as the end of this week or early next week."
Stoops is denying anything is going on. He's spoken with several national and local reporters and has denied any interest in the FSU job which became open when Florida State fired second-year coach Willie Taggart.
In another tweet Herbstreit reported Stoops also said "I haven't spoken to anyone" about the Florida State job.
Stoops' name has been mentioned as a possible successor to Taggart and Stoops' brother Mark has also been mentioned in speculation along with former Stoops OU assistants Mike Leach and Brent Venables.
