The Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Auburn Tigers 24-17 in a thrilling SEC showdown on Saturday (September 20) in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners, now ranked No. 11, set a school record with 10 sacks, overpowering the No. 22 Tigers and securing their fourth consecutive win of the season.
Quarterback John Mateer, who transferred from Washington State, led the Sooners with 271 passing yards and a touchdown. He also scored the game-winning touchdown on a 9-yard run with 4:54 remaining, capping off a six-play, 75-yard drive. Mateer expressed his excitement, saying, "As a quarterback, to be able to do that drill — two-minute drill or game-winning drive — that’s what you dream about."
Oklahoma's defense, led by R Mason Thomas and Jayden Jackson, played a crucial role in the victory. Thomas, who missed the first half due to a targeting penalty in the previous game, made a significant impact in the second half with two sacks, including a game-clinching safety. Jackson contributed 2.5 sacks, as the Sooners' defensive line dominated the game.
Auburn's quarterback, Jackson Arnold, who previously played for Oklahoma, faced a tough challenge against his former team. Despite passing for 220 yards and a touchdown, Arnold was sacked nine times and struggled to escape the relentless Oklahoma pass rush.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables praised his team's performance, highlighting their determination and grit. He stated, "We talked about going into the game, the only non-negotiable that has to happen for us to win this game is when the storyline has to say y’all (defensive linemen) played your butt off."
With this win, the Sooners head into their bye week unbeaten and are expected to climb higher in the rankings. They will face Kent State on Saturday (October 4) after the break.
