OU tight end Grant Calcaterra, who'd been out of the Sooners lineup for more than a month, revealed the reason why in a video he posted on social media and then made the announcement he would be retiring from football.
"Football has been the biggest thrill of my life and it kills me to know it's over," he said. But the real truth Calcaterra had learned is that not retiring from football might have really killed him.
Calling it "the hardest decision I've ever had to make" Calcaterra told his friends and fans he'd had a concussion in practice several weeks ago and that "I've had my fair share of concussions in my career."

Calcaterra is ending his Sooner career with 637 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. This season, he had five catches for 79 yards. The last one coming in a game at Kansas back on October 5th, good for 19 yards.
Calcaterra will likely forever be remembered for his one-handed catch for a touchdown in last year’s Big 12 Championship Game against Texas.
That catch sealed the win for the Sooners and sent them on into the College Football Playoff.
Calcaterra plans to move back home to southern California and become a firefighter.
